The classes

Our classes will focus on self defence and anti-bullying skills centred around Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting & submissions. Read more about the sport and benefit to kids. The class will also include basic striking and wrestling techniques. The class is on Monday from 4:30 – 6:00.

We will look to add more classes as demand grows.

The age range is from 6 to 13.

Unfortunately, the class is subject to cancellation from time to time. This is due to the venue booking larger events.

Signup & payment

After a free trial class, the classes are £30 a month (cancel anytime).

There is no need to book beforehand, just turn up 5-10 minutes before the class start. The registration/disclaimer form above must be filled out.

About Ruislip BJJ

Ruislip BJJ is founded by Black Belts Raj Singh and Wiktor Herka, both under Rodger Middleton (Roger Gracie Academy Black Belt).

Raj in addition trains in Mixed Martial Arts under the Sekhon Brothers, at Beast Fight Team. After starting adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in 2016 and then expanding to adult striking/MMA classes and ladies only classes – we’re proud that we’re now starting kids classes.

We are based in McGovern park, situated between Ruislip & Northolt. We have a large matted training zone, sitting area with large TVs and a bar for relaxing afterwards! There’s plenty of safe & free parking on the premises. We are DBS checked and cleared, certificate number is: 001121432080

Class structure

Here’s what we will typically include in a class:

  • Technique: a lot of time will be spent practising martial arts techniques, from basics and beyond.
  • Strength, Conditioning & Stretching: bodyweight exercises such as press ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, and squats will be a regular part of training, as well as stretching.
  • Sparring: each session will involve live grappling sparring with similarly sized children. When sparring in striking, there will be no headshots.
  • Games: we’ll add games that relate back to strength, fitness & martial arts.
  • Q&A: We’ll often use stretching time at the end of the sessions and add Q&As with the kids.

Viewing the class

There are two upstairs halls in the venue. While all attempts will be made to be based in the larger hall where there is seating for parents, from time to time we will also need to be based in the smaller hall which has limited seating. If you’d like to stay and view the class, if seating is available you are welcome to do so.

Although, please note that there should be no coaching from the sidelines, and no interrupting the class. In sparring, it can be difficult to watch your child being in a losing position.

However it is essential that parents do not shout instructions or encouragement. This can result in confusion for the children/instructors and upset your childs sparring partner. If you need to take a call, please take it outside. You can let me or another instructor know if you need something, or have any concerns.

Drinks

Please bring a drink that your child can have on breaks.

Discipline

Martial arts and discipline go hand-in-hand. We want to keep the class fun and productive – however, we understand that sometimes kids will act up. When a child is not co-operating, the usual remedy will be a firm talk, and/or X number of pushups, squats, etc. If the child still doesn’t engage, we may need to have them sit out of the class for a period of time. In exceptional cases, if your child is not interested and/or continually disruptive they may be suspended from future classes.

Drop-off and pickup

Please drop off and pick up from the doors upstairs. Aim to drop your child at least 5 minutes before the class is due to start. Please note that footwear must be removed if you are stepping onto the mats. This is to avoid bacteria on footwear spreading onto the mats which will then inevitably cause skin infections to our students.

Injuries

We take several measures to minimize the risk of injury. However, bumps and bruises from martial arts are to be expected from time to time. Slightly more serious injuries such as sprained ankles, pulled elbows, etc can happen, although it is rare. By engaging in this class, you acknowledge that there are inherent risks in the live practice of martial arts. Please let me know beforehand if your child has any medical conditions that could affect their ability to practise martial arts.

Equipment & clothing

The classes will be Gi based. A Gi is not essential for your child to start training, one can be purchased in the later weeks. We recommend the below site to get a good, long-lasting Gi. Please purchase one with a white belt. As your child progresses, we will pay for future belts. There is no additional charges for gradings etc in the future. https://www.tatamifightwear.com/collections/kids

Hygiene

Please ensure your child’s nails are cut short – long nails can cause injury. If your child is sick or develops any skin issues, please do not send them to class until they are better.

Social media

If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you’ll see that we regularly post pictures and videos of our team in action. I would like to continue this for the kids class, to help inspire others, and acknowledge those that are performing well. Unfortunately due to the nature of the classes, we can’t accommodate parents who do not wish for us to include their children in social media posts. Please be aware that our registration/disclaimer form covers this. If you would like me to tag you in videos that your child appears in, let me know.
